Founded in Chicago in 1876, Sacred Heart Schools at Sheridan Road (Hardey Preparatory for Boys and Academy of the Sacred Heart for Girls are independent, Catholic, single-sex, elementary schools committed to academic excellence within the context of a Christian, faith-based community.  The educational mission is deeply rooted in the 200-year tradition of the Society of the Sacred Heart and shared with the Network of Sacred Heart Schools located in 30 countries; including 24 schools in the United States and Canada.  The essence of this tradition is the total development of each child: spiritual, intellectual, social, emotional, and physical. Our girls and boys are taught in single-sex classrooms but follow a similar curriculum and share in many activities.  With a total enrollment of approximately 700 students, the Schools are organized into three academic divisions, each led by a division head.

Position Description

Sacred Heart Schools is seeking a full-time and part-time Security Officer.  The Security Officer provides security for the school’s faculty, staff, students, buildings and property within the scope of the Sacred Heart Schools Goals and Criteria.  The Security Officer patrols the building(s) and building (s) perimeters, including the parking lots, in order to prevent unauthorized visitors or property damage and provides security for the general building and grounds. 

 

Essential Job Functions

  • Oversees and participates in security inspections of school facilities
  • Develops and periodically monitors a reporting system designed to detect security issues in school facilities
  • Makes recommendations to correct security issues once identified
  • Participates in providing security for all occupants of school buildings and grounds
  • Provides assistance and security to community agencies using school facilities and for after school activities
  • Prevents unauthorized visitors from entering school buildings and/or loitering on school grounds
  • Informs counselors, parents, teachers and school administrators of student behavior problems
  • Carries out investigations, upon request
  • Maintains liaison with police, fire and other municipal departments to insure maximum use of their services in order to provide adequate security and safety
  • Represents school in court-related matters
  • Prepares reports and assists in special assignments as directed
  • Uses computer software such as Microsoft Office Suite, e-mail, online calendars, and school databases in performing work assignments
  • May assist in handling emergency disciplinary matters
  • The full-time security guard schedules the security assignments of part-time security guards, staff, and school monitors with regard to building access and school security procedures
  • Fulfilling other responsibilities as assigned by the Facilities Director which are subject to change at any time including to satisfy a reasonable accommodation or for other reasons

 

Qualities and Requirements

  • Sworn and or retired police officer
  • Knowledge of police and security techniques;
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques employed in establishing and maintaining building security
  • Skill in observing and detecting unusual occurrences or behavior;
  • Ability to use computer applications such as Outlook calendars, e-mail, and databases
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, school personnel, subordinates and the general public
  • Ability to maintain records and prepare written reports
  • Initiative
  • Sound judgment
  • Tact and courtesy
  • Physical condition commensurate with the duties of the position
  • CPR and AED training preferred
