Mission Statement

Sacred Heart Schools on Sheridan Road-the Academy of the Sacred Heart for Girls (founded in 1876) and Hardey Preparatory for Boys (founded in 1935)-are independent, Catholic, single-sex elementary schools committed to academic excellence within the context of a Christian community. Description

The School Nurse is the administrator for all health care provided for the students and fosters the health and well-being of the whole child, aligned with the mission of Sacred Heart Schools as seen in the Goals and Criteria. The School Nurse works independently in the school setting to strengthen and facilitate the educational process by improving and protecting the health status of children. The major focus of the School Nurse is the prevention of illness and disability, and the early detection and correction of health problems. The School Nurse is uniquely qualified in preventive health, health assessment and referral procedures.

Essential Job Functions: 
1) Responsible for assessing and caring for unwell students.
2) Administering required medications to students during school hours.
3) Providing general health guidance to students and families.
4) Guiding and supporting families and teachers in situations of chronic illness or death.
5) Interfaces with Student Service Team with regard to psychosocial wellness.
6) Monitoring students’ health related absences. Providing follow up with all constituents when necessary.
7) Notifying reportable, communicable disease.
8) Supporting and providing information for faculty and staff about relevant illness.
9) Education of administration, staff, faculty on community health and safety issues:  i.e.  Allergies, diabetes, asthma, head injuries, OSHA, blood borne pathogens, playground safety, part of emergency response team.
10) Coordinating annual vision and hearing screening as required by the State of Illinois.
11) Consulting on nutrition and food served/brought into the school environment.
12) Care coordination with students, parents, and teachers.
13) Resource for Sex Education for Middle School students.

Must be reliable, dependable and prompt and have a friendly energetic demeanor.
Demonstrates excellent communication skills.
Must be responsible and committed to helping students at kindergarten through eighth grade.
Must be enthusiastic about children’s health and wellness.
Must be a team player.

Qualifications: 
A baccalaureate degree is required.
Registered profession nurse certified with the Illinois Department of Professional Regulation.
Illinois School Nursing Certification preferred, but not required.
CPR/AED Certification
Three to five years’ experience as a professional registered nurse preferably in Pediatrics or Family Medicine.
Proficient computer skills: including database management and a working knowledge of Microsoft Word.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
School Nurse Office with ability to lift 5- 10 pounds if necessary.
