School Description
Founded in Chicago in 1876, Sacred Heart Schools at Sheridan Road (Hardey Preparatory for Boys and Academy of
the Sacred Heart for Girls) are independent, Catholic, single-gender elementary schools committed to academic
excellence within the context of a Christian, faith-based community. The educational mission is deeply rooted in the
200-year tradition of the Society of the Sacred Heart and shared with the Network of Sacred Heart Schools located in
30 countries; including 25 schools in the United States and Canada. The essence of this tradition is the total
development of each child: spiritual, intellectual, social, emotional and physical. Our girls and boys are taught
primarily in single-gender classrooms, but follow a similar curriculum and share in many activities. With a total
enrollment of approximately 600 students, the Schools are organized into three academic divisions each led by a
division head.

Position Description

The Full-Time Substitute Teacher is directly accountable to the Executive Assistant to the Head of Schools and
works to implement the Goals and Criteria and the philosophy of Sacred Heart education.
The Full-Time Substitute Teacher provides substitute teaching coverage for all grades and subjects, preschool
through 8th grade. When possible, they interface with the teacher in advance to become familiar with the lessons to
be taught. If there is no specific substitute assignment for a day, they will reach out to division heads and/or other
teachers to offer assistance in a specific division or throughout the Schools.

The Full-Time Substitute Teacher:
  •  is comfortable teaching all grades and interfacing with all children ages 3-14.
  •  is comfortable teaching math for 3 rd - 5 th grade and has some knowledge of algebra at the middle school level.
  •  learns Science Labs and is able to teach them at the middle school level if needed.
  •  works closely with the division heads regarding school procedures and classroom management.
  •  serves as the point person for other substitute teachers if there are questions regarding their responsibilities.
  •  is flexible and adaptable to any situation that arises regarding teaching or duties assigned during the day.
  •  covers short and long-term subbing for a teacher, if needed.
  •  has knowledge of a foreign language but is not required.
  •  is proficient in the use of technology i.e., document cameras, classroom projectors, laptops, and iPads.

Essential Job Functions:
  •  Provides substitute teaching coverage for all grades and subjects, preschool through 8th grade
  •  Works with School Office Assistant/Substitute Teacher Coordinator for daily substitute teaching assignments
  •  Provides support to School Office & Portry
  •  Fulfills other responsibilities as assigned by the Executive Assistant to the Head of Schools which are subject to change at any time including to satisfy a reasonable accommodation or for other reasons

Qualities and Requirements:

● Bachelor’s degree required
● 3 - 5 years of teaching experience
● Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills
