School Description
Founded in Chicago in 1876, Sacred Heart Schools at Sheridan Road (Hardey Preparatory for Boys and
Academy of the Sacred Heart for Girls) are independent, Catholic, single-sex elementary schools
committed to academic excellence within the context of a Christian, faith-based community. The
educational mission is deeply rooted in the 200-year tradition of the Society of the Sacred Heart and
shared with the Network of Sacred Heart Schools located in 30 countries; including 25 schools in the
United States and Canada. The essence of this tradition is the total development of each child: spiritual,
intellectual, social, emotional and physical. In first through eighth grades, girls and boys are taught in
single-gender classrooms, but follow a similar curriculum and share in many activities. With a total
enrollment of approximately 600 students, the Schools are organized into three academic divisions each
led by a division head.
Position Description
The Interim Physical Education Teacher and Assistant Athletic Director upholds the mission of the
Network of Sacred Heart Schools as expressed in the Goals and Criteria and the mission statement of
Sacred Heart Schools. The Interim Teacher/Assistant Athletic Director is responsible to the Head of
Student Life. They assist the Athletic Director with overseeing the athletic department, as well as working
with Division Heads to cover 4th and 5th Grade Physical Education.
Essential Job Functions:
PHYSICAL EDUCATION INSTRUCTION
● Teaching PE to 2 grade levels under the direction of the Division Head
● Developing curriculum and implementing instruction
● Assessing students and using that information to report progress to parents and inform instruction
● Securing needed materials to execute lessons
● Implementing effective classroom management practices to maintain an engaging and safe
classroom
● Communicating with parents regarding students’ progress, through regular communication,
progress reports, report cards, and parent teacher conferences
● Collaborating with classroom teachers to address student behavior or learning needs
● Collaborating with PE teachers across divisions for vertical curriculum articulation
● Other duties as assigned
ATHLETICS
Supervision
● Opening/closing and supervising gym facilities
● Providing leadership and general supervision of student sports activities and Loyola Work Study
students
● Training, supervising and mentoring all Athletic Coaches
● Assisting and supporting security officer when necessary
● Providing a clean, safe, and secure environment
● In Athletic Director’s absence, enforcing facility, equipment and program rules/regulations as well
as taking appropriate disciplinary action with participants when necessary
● Acting as a representative for the school with the league on game days
● Diffusing any potential problems involving spectators, coaches, or players
● Monitoring athlete pick-up at two campuses
Equipment and Supplies
● Maintaining and operating the proper use of athletic equipment and supplies by participants
● Organizing and storing all equipment at the conclusion of the day’s activities
● Maintaining inventory of athletic equipment and assisting with ordering new equipment
Uniforms
● Maintaining uniform inventory, distribution, return (working with PAAC and team parents) and
storage; updating digital inventory records after each season
● Ongoing evaluation of uniform needs and creating/ordering new uniforms
Rosters and Schedules
● Assisting Athletic Director with all practice and game scheduling across all leagues
Additional
● Attending PAAC and CCYL League meetings
● Filling in for practices/games when coaches are unexpectedly out or during shortage
● Supporting ongoing Student Life programming (Field Day, Red and White Induction, Justice Day,
Conge, etc.)
● Other duties as assigned
Qualities and Requirements
● Bachelor’s degree required
● Three years of coordination experience in elementary school athletics, program support, and
coaching
● One+ years of experience teaching physical education
● Clear and concise verbal and written communication skills
● Demonstrated experience of effective behavior management and parent communications
● Strong organizational and follow-through skills; impeccable attention to detail
● Excellent interpersonal skills
● Ability to collaborate well with a team
● Flexible, patient, and the ability to problem solve, including de-escalating stressful situations
● Fun and engaging personality
● Computer skills: Google Suite (Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides)
● Experience with Blackbaud (or similar management system) and sports management system
preferred
● Available on weeknights and weekends for athletic-related events
