Sacred Heart Schools on Sheridan Road has been shaping leaders since 1876 as independent, Catholic, single-gender elementary schools in a co-institutional environment.  We are committed to academic excellence within the context of a Christian community and to ensuring that students of all faiths, identities, and socio-economic backgrounds can flourish spiritually, intellectually, and emotionally.  Our educational mission is rooted in the tradition of the Society of the Sacred Heart and is shared with the Global Network of Sacred Heart Schools located on every major continent, including 25 schools in the United States and Canada.  With a total enrollment of over 600 students, the Schools are organized into three academic divisions each led by a division head.

Position Description

Sacred Heart Schools seeks Substitute Teachers who are directly accountable to the Executive Assistant to the Head of Schools and the Division Head they are supporting.  The fundamental trait of a Sacred Heart educator is one that teaches and supervises children with a loving and generous spirit. Substitute Teachers work with students and faculty members to ensure that the spirit and life of the Schools reflect the Goals and Criteria of Sacred Heart education.

Teach in an individual student-focused atmosphere with a tradition for the total development of each child: spiritual, intellectual, social, emotional, and physical.  Our curriculum for the head and the heart is one that is both academically exceptional and responds to the world’s needs – respect, compassion, generosity, grace, intention, justice, and hope. Thrive in a collaborative, creative, and progressive environment with opportunities for professional development, meaningful community participation, and the chance to make a difference for students and families.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Follows the curriculum developed and put in place by the absent faculty member
  • Applies appropriate instructional methods for meeting lesson objectives
  • Supports the disciplinary guidelines of the School and carries them out with respect for the integrity of each child
  • Fills additional duties when needed (i.e., playground supervision, lunchroom supervision, etc.)
  • Understands the use of unscheduled class time, between 7:45am and 4:00pm, as time for classroom planning and other tasks as directed by the Division Head
  • Utilizes and manages classroom technology

Qualities and Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; degree work in the field of education preferred
  • Experience delivering age-appropriate curriculum
  • Solid classroom, behavior, and time management skills that focus on children’s best interests and goals
  • Knowledge of basic technology (i.e., Google Docs)
  • A warm and welcoming personality, comfortable with a diverse school population of children, staff, and families
  • Knowledge of Spanish or French languages is a plus
